Treating Calluses & Corns
Calluses and corns are common complaints. They are usually caused by pressure or friction on the feet. At first they seem harmless, but over time they can hurt and restrict your mobility. In this article we show you effective treatment methods – above all with high-quality pedicure and manicure instruments.
Tools for calluses & hard skin
Remove it instead of softening it – that keeps the skin healthy:
- Stainless steel callus shaver + 100 blades – removes thick calluses safely
- Basic callus rasp – the gentle way to start at home
- Long callus shaver – for large areas of hard skin on the heel
What are calluses and corns?
- Calluses (callus): Thickened, hardened patches of skin, usually on the balls of the feet or the heels.
- Corns (clavus): Small, round, hardened spots with a hard core – often between or on the toes.
Both are caused by pressure points, for example shoes that are too tight or misaligned feet.
The causes at a glance
- Poorly fitting footwear
- Walking barefoot on hard floors a lot
- Foot deformities (for example hallux valgus)
- Excessive build-up of hard skin
Treatment options with pedicure and manicure instruments
1. A foot bath to prepare
A warm foot bath (10 to 15 minutes) softens the skin and makes it easier to remove hard skin and pressure points.
💡 Tip: Add a dash of apple cider vinegar or a special foot bath additive to the water – it has an antibacterial and soothing effect.
2. Removing hard skin with a rasp or file
- Callus rasp: Suitable for coarse calluses. Always work in one direction.
Our online shop stocks several types of callus rasp. First of all the classic stainless steel version:
There is also a more affordable version with a plastic handle:
- Fine callus file: For finishing and smoothing.
Glass or ceramic files are ideal for gentle finishing.
3. Removing corns precisely
- Corn knife or scalpel: For experienced hands only – ideal for pinpoint removal.
Scalpel handles such as the classic no. 3 and no. 4 handles and the matching scalpel blades can be found in our Scalpels & blades category.
- Bur with a diamond head (for electric pedicures): Particularly hygienic and precise.
Burs for removing and finishing the skin of the foot are also in our Nail burs & bits category. We carry ceramic burs, tungsten carbide burs as well as cone-shaped and ball-shaped nail bits.
- Manicure instruments: A cuticle pusher and tweezers help you work gently on sensitive areas.
For fine work on the cuticle or for removing small flaps of skin we offer a wide range of double-ended instruments such as cuticle pushers, nail knives, cotton hooks, corner lifters and tamponade instruments.
⚠️ Please note: Painful or deep-seated corns belong in the hands of a podiatrist.
4. Care after the treatment
- Foot cream with urea (10–25 %): Provides the skin with moisture and prevents new hard skin.
- Antibacterial sprays: Prevent inflammation after the treatment.
- Cotton socks: Support regeneration overnight.
Prevention matters most
- Wear well-fitting, breathable shoes.
- Care for your feet regularly – at least once a week.
- Use insoles or padding against friction.
- Apply a moisturising foot cream every day.
