Which tool for fingernails?

  • Nail scissors – the classic for fingernails. Curved blades follow the natural shape of the nail, straight blades suit the thumbnail.
  • Nail clippers – quick and uncomplicated, ideal for travelling and for anyone who likes it short and precise.
  • Nail nippers – useful for particularly hard or thick fingernails, for example on the thumb, where scissors reach their limit.
  • Nail file – for shaping and smoothing the edge after cutting. For brittle nails a glass file is the gentlest option.

What to look for when buying

Frequently asked questions about fingernail care

Nail scissors or nail clippers for fingernails?

Nail scissors give you more control over the shape, the clipper is faster. For a well-groomed manicure the scissors are usually the better choice – for travelling, the clipper.

How often should fingernails be cut?

Fingernails grow faster than toenails – every one to two weeks is a good rhythm. Afterwards always file the edge in one direction.

Should the cuticle be cut or pushed back?

Pushing it back with a cuticle pusher after a hand bath is gentler. Only skin that really stands out should be removed with fine cuticle scissors – the cuticle protects the nail bed from germs.
