Getting nail clippers sharpened – when it's worth it and when it's not

A good pair of nail scissors is not a throwaway item. It can be re-sharpened and, with proper care, will last for decades.

But before you send it in: in many cases the scissors are not blunt at all. They are simply out of adjustment.

First check: blunt or just stiff?

Both problems feel similar, but they need completely different solutions.

Signs of a genuinely blunt edge:

• The scissors crush the nail instead of cutting through it
• The nail splinters or frays along the cut
• The cut works in the middle but fails at the tip

Signs of a problem at the joint:

• The scissors are stiff or catch when opening and closing
• The blades wobble sideways against each other
• The movement feels rough or gritty

In the second case, sharpening will not help. Here the screw – called a “Nagel” in Solingen – is either too tight or too loose, or there is dirt in the joint.

Simple self-help

1. Clean the joint thoroughly and remove soap residue and nail dust
2. Dry it completely
3. Put a tiny drop of oil into the joint and work the scissors several times
4. If the screw is too loose, tighten it slightly – really only slightly

Very often the scissors work well again afterwards. An over-tightened screw, on the other hand, makes even the sharpest blade useless.

Why you should not sharpen nail scissors yourself

A sharpening stone may work on kitchen scissors. On nail or cuticle scissors it does not – for two reasons:

The hollow grind. The inner faces of the blades are slightly curved inwards. This reduces friction and means the two halves only touch at a single point. Grinding that face flat destroys exactly this effect.

The twist. The two halves of the scissors are twisted against each other so that they meet only at the upper cutting edge. The sharpener sets this geometry by hand when aligning the scissors. It cannot be restored with household methods.

And the tricks you find online? Cutting aluminium foil or pulling sandpaper through the scissors does not sharpen them. It merely removes the burr and feels better for a short while – while wearing the edge down further.

What can be re-sharpened – and what cannot

The decisive point is how the two halves are joined:

• Screwed joint – the scissors can be taken apart, sharpened and readjusted. Service is possible.
• Riveted joint – cannot be taken apart. Re-sharpening is rarely worthwhile, and readjusting is impossible.

That is exactly why a screwed joint is one of the most important quality features when buying.

Blades with serration cannot be re-sharpened either – as found on thinning scissors, for example. The serration cannot be restored without destroying its function.

One more note: a key-cutting shop or a DIY-store sharpening machine is not suitable for nail scissors. They need a hand that knows the hollow grind.

How it works:

2. We check whether re-sharpening is worthwhile and tell you the price.
3. We provide you with a return label.
4. You send the instrument in and please state its value.
5. Processing takes three to four weeks.
6. You receive your instrument back sharpened and realigned.

Why we ask for the value: should anything go wrong in transit or during processing, compensation is based on the value you have stated. Please give a realistic figure – especially for old heirlooms or high-quality Solingen instruments.

If processing is not possible – for example with serrated thinning scissors, riveted models or badly rusted instruments – we will tell you beforehand. That saves you waiting time and unnecessary costs.

Is it worth it at all?

For cheap riveted drugstore scissors: no. The service costs more than the instrument.

For high-quality Solingen scissors: almost always. You pay a fraction of the price of a new pair and get back an instrument that cuts like it did on day one. That is exactly where the economic sense of a good instrument lies – and the ecological one too.

How to keep the scissors sharp for longer

• Dry them after every use – moisture in the joint is the worst enemy
• An occasional drop of oil on the screw
• Nail scissors for nails only, cuticle scissors for skin only
• Never cut paper, tape, plasters or hair with them
• Do not carry them loose in a wash bag – the tips suffer
• Never use force: if it jams, something else is wrong

Conclusion

Check the joint first – in many cases that solves the problem. If the edge really is blunt, put the scissors into expert hands instead of experimenting yourself.

And if the scissors are riveted and no longer cut: that is the moment to invest in a pair that can be repaired.
