Splinter tweezers have very fine, tapered tips that meet exactly. Only then can you grip a splinter sitting just below the surface of the skin – slanted cosmetic tweezers usually just push it in deeper.

How to remove a splinter

  • Wash your hands and the tweezers, then disinfect the tips.
  • Light the area well. For very small splinters, tweezers with a magnifier help.
  • Pull the splinter out in the direction it went in, not sideways – otherwise it breaks off.
  • Grip close to the skin. Pulling on the protruding end makes the splinter snap.
  • Disinfect the spot afterwards and keep an eye on it. See a doctor in case of redness, swelling or a remaining fragment.

What to look for when buying

  • Tips that close exactly – hold them up to the light: no gap, no lateral offset.
  • Fine but stable tip – tips that are too thin bend on the first firm pull.
  • Stainless steel – can be disinfected, which is not optional with splinters and ingrown hairs.
  • Magnifier tweezers – if you have trouble seeing small splinters without glasses.
