Treatments for calluses & corns
Calluses and corns are common foot problems that often arise from pressure or friction. Although they may seem harmless at first, they can cause pain and limit mobility over time. In this blog post, we'll show you effective treatment methods—especially with high-quality pedicure and manicure tools.
What are calluses and corns?
- Calluses: Thickened, hardened areas of skin, usually on the balls of the feet or heels.
- Corns (clavus): Small, round, hardened areas with a hard core – often between or on the toes.
Both are caused by pressure points, e.g., from shoes that are too tight or misalignment of the feet.
Causes at a glance
- Ill-fitting footwear
- Frequent barefoot walking on hard floors
- Foot deformities (e.g. hallux valgus)
- Excessive corneal production
Treatment options with pedicure and manicure instruments
1. Foot bath for preparation
A warm foot bath (10–15 minutes) softens the skin and makes it easier to remove calluses and pressure sores.
💡 Tip: Add a dash of apple cider vinegar or special foot bath additives to the water – this has an antibacterial and soothing effect.
2. Callus removal with rasp or file
- Callus rasp: Suitable for coarse calluses. Always work in one direction.
In our online shop, you'll find various types of callus rasps. One is the classic version made of stainless steel:
But there is also a cheaper version with a plastic handle:
- Fine callus file: For finishing and smoothing.
For gentle finishing, glass files or ceramic files are suitable
3. Precise corn removal
- Corn knife or scalpel: For experienced hands only – ideal for precise removal.
Scalpel handles such as classes 3 and 4 as well as the corresponding scalpel blades can be found in our Scalpels & Blades category.
- Drill with diamond attachment (for electric pedicure): Particularly hygienic and precise.
You can also find cutters for removing and refinishing foot skin in our Nail Cutters & Bits category. We offer ceramic cutters, carbide cutters, as well as conical and spherical nail bits.
- Manicure instruments: Cuticle pushers and tweezers help with gentle treatment of sensitive areas.
For fine work on the cuticles or removing fine pieces of skin, we have a variety of double instruments such as cuticle pushers, nail knives, cotton hooks, corner lifters and tamponing instruments.
⚠️ Note: If corns are painful or deep-seated, you should consult a podiatrist!
4. Care after treatment
- Foot cream with urea (10–25%) : Moisturizes the skin and prevents new calluses.
- Antibacterial sprays: Prevent inflammation after treatment.
- Cotton socks: Support overnight regeneration.
Prevention is key
- Wear well-fitting, breathable shoes.
- Regular foot care – at least once a week.
- Use insoles or pads to prevent friction.
- Daily care with a moisturizing foot cream.
