Fingernail Scissors

Fingernail scissors are built more finely than toenail scissors: shorter, thinner blades and an easier action, because fingernails are softer and the cutting line is more visible. Most of our range comes from Solingen workshops – DOVO, Dreiturm, Erbe and Niegeloh.

Curved or straight?

  • Curved blade – the standard for fingernails. It follows the natural curve of the nail, so the shape is right after a few cuts.
  • Straight blade – for the thumbnail and for anyone who prefers a squarer nail shape.
  • Pointed blade – for fine work at the nail corner and on the cuticle.

Important: this recommendation applies to fingernails only. Toenails are cut straight so that the nail corner does not grow in.

Large or small finger rings?

An underrated criterion when buying. Large rings give more control and are more comfortable if the finger joints are stiff. Small rings guide the scissors more precisely, but call for a firmer grip. If you are unsure, choose a size larger.

How to recognise good scissors

  • Cleanly closing blade overlap – the scissors cut the nail instead of crushing it. Crushed nails split later on.
  • Hand grinding – this determines how long the scissors stay sharp.
  • Re-sharpenability – a pair of Solingen scissors will last you decades if it is re-sharpened every few years. Within the warranty period we do this free of charge.
  • Stainless or nickel-plated – both exist. Nickel-plated instruments are not stainless; we state this in every product description.

Care

Dry the scissors after cutting and store them dry, and put a drop of oil into the joint now and then. Keep them away from creams and cleaning agents – aggressive ingredients attack the steel.
