The best nail scissors

Which nail scissors are the best?
You will find the right nail scissors for fingernails and toenails in our overview – straight, curved or pointed.
Nail scissors are the best when their blade shape matches the nail: curved for fingernails, straight and strong for toenails, pointed for cuticles and corners. This guide shows which scissors suit whom and answers the question of the test winner honestly.
In short: which nail scissors suit whom?
- Normal fingernails – nail scissors with a curved blade; anyone who also cuts the cuticle takes the combination scissors.
- Cuticles and nail corners – extra-pointed cuticle scissors.
- Thick toenails – toenail scissors with a short, strong blade; for very hard nails, preferably a nail nipper.
- Babies and toddlers – baby scissors with rounded tips.
- Left-handers – left-handed nail scissors with mirror-inverted blades.
- A traditional Solingen brand – the Dovo nail scissors or toenail scissors from Dreiturm.
On the word “test winner”: We do not carry out our own product tests and do not crown a winner – and as far as we know, there has so far been no nail scissors test by Stiftung Warentest (more on this in the questions at the end). What you get here are the criteria by which nail scissors can be measured, and the models from our range that meet these criteria.

Which nail scissors are the best and what are the advantages and disadvantages of nail scissors?
In nail care, choosing the right tools is decisive for a flawless result. Discover our varied selection of high-quality nail scissors in different shapes, including pointed, extra-pointed, tower-pointed and curved.
In addition we offer a practical combination scissors that meets your individual needs. Find out which model best suits your requirements and preferences. Curved nail scissors are especially suitable because they adapt to the natural shape of the nail. Pointed and tower-pointed nail scissors are suitable above all for thin nails and nail corners.
Advantages of nail scissors:
- often considerably lighter in the hand than a nail nipper
- high-quality materials ensure a long service life
- low risk of injury compared with other tools
- easy to clean and hygienic to maintain
- suitable for finger and toe nails
Disadvantages:
- not suitable for thick toenails or thumbnails (here it is better to use a proper nail nipper)
- often several cuts until the perfect result (if sharp edges remain as a result, you can easily work on them with a nail file )
Why are nail scissors curved?
The curved shape of the blade is easy to explain, because it is modelled on the natural shape of the nails, which likewise have a round, curved form. In addition, with curved nail scissors a file can be dispensed with, because you cut along the shape of the nail and this leaves no unpleasant nail edges. We offer both curved and straight shapes of nail scissors.
May you carry nail scissors in hand luggage?
Nail scissors as well as nail clippers may be taken along. The rule is that blades up to a length of at most 6 cm may be carried. That means that with nail files you should measure them or rather pack the file straight away in your check-in luggage. In our range all blades are under 6 cm, so that you do not have to worry about your daily manicure & pedicure while travelling.
Our nail scissors recommendations
This is how good scissors cut – three recommendations:
- Nail scissors set for finger and toe nails – two pairs of scissors for both applications
- Dovo nail scissors – premium quality from a traditional Solingen manufacturer
- Toenail scissors – straight blade for thick toenails
What kinds of nail scissors are there at all?
The extra-pointed shape - for fine work
When it comes to delicate fine work, the extra-pointed scissors are the first choice. With their extremely fine tip you can shape even the most demanding nail forms with precision. Perfect for trimming nail edges and cutting nail-art designs.
With the extra-pointed scissors you achieve the highest degree of accuracy and creative design. Their fine, tapering blade allows you to reach even the smallest corners and edges effortlessly. Thanks to their precision, the pointed scissors are also excellently suited to cutting the cuticle and to removing annoying bits of skin.

If nail scissors are not enough for your purpose because you mainly want to work on ingrown, thick toenails or thumbnails, then it is better to reach for a professional head cutter or a nail nipper with lever action. In the long run, nail nippers are often more robust and more durable.
What alternatives to nail scissors are there? Nail scissors vs. nail clippers
As an alternative to nail scissors, nail nippers or nail clippers are suitable. Nail nippers are particularly suitable for thicker, larger nails that require a lot of force to cut. Nail clippers are rather practical tools for quickly cutting both fingernails and toenails. With a nail clipper, however, reworking with the nail file is necessary, because unlike with nail scissors it is not possible to cut perfectly along the nail.
Nail scissors for babies, seniors and left-handers
Especially for babies there are rounded nail scissors (baby nail scissors); they are made in such a way that the tip is rounded, so that there are no spots that can cause injury.
For seniors, the most suitable choice is toenail scissors with long handles or our broad model of the toenail scissors. Felt scissors have a long handle in order to reach the toenail better, but also so that the leverage is greater, in order to be able to cut thicker nails with less force.
For left-handers, nail scissors whose blade has been forged in the opposite direction are suitable.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a nail scissors test by Stiftung Warentest?
Not as far as we know (as of September 2026). Stiftung Warentest has not yet published a comparative test of nail scissors of its own. There is only a general foot care guide on test.de with the advice to cut toenails “relatively straight” – a recommendation on technique, not a product test.
Which nail scissors are the test winner?
There is no independently determined test winner. What appears as a “test winner” on comparison portals is as a rule based on sales rankings and customer reviews, not on a test of their own. It is more reliable to match the blade shape to the purpose – see the table above.
Curved or straight nail scissors – which is better?
For fingernails the curved ones, because they follow the natural curve of the nail. For toenails the straight ones: toenails are cut straight so that the corners do not grow in.
How do I recognise good nail scissors?
The blades close right up to the tip without a gap, the joint has no play, and the nail is cut cleanly instead of being squeezed. In addition, stainless steel, so that the scissors can be cleaned hygienically.
Nail scissors or nail clipper?
Nail scissors cut more precisely along the shape of the nail and need hardly any reworking. The nail clipper is quicker, but leaves an edge that usually has to be filed afterwards. For very thick nails neither is ideal – a nail nipper helps there.
How long do good nail scissors last?
With proper use, many years. Important: only cut nails and cuticles, clean after use and store dry. High-quality scissors can be resharpened by a grinder.
