Nail cleaner: getting the nail fold clean without irritating it
Everything collects under the free edge of the nail: soil from the garden, flour from baking, oil from the workshop. The fingernail of your other hand is no help here - it usually pushes the dirt further back instead of bringing it out. That is what a nail cleaner is for: a slim stainless steel instrument with a flattened or spoon-shaped tip.
The most important rule first
A nail cleaner works under the free edge of the nail - where the nail has already separated from the nail bed. It has no business in the nail bed itself. Go too far back and you break the bond between nail and bed; the spot turns white, becomes sensitive and is an open door for germs.
Two things follow from that: keep it flat, do not jab. And soften first - after a shower or a short hand bath, almost everything comes away on its own.
Which shape for which job?

The flat, slightly angled tip slides under the edge of the nail and pushes the dirt forward and out. The wide contact surface spreads the pressure - which is why it also works well on a sensitive nail bed. For most people, this is the right choice.

Step by step
- Soften. Two to three minutes in warm water, or work straight after a shower.
- Keep it flat. The instrument lies almost parallel to the nail, not upright.
- Push from back to front, do not scrape. The dirt should leave the nail, not travel around under it.
- Not too far back. Stop where the nail sits firmly again.
- Rinse and moisturise. A drop of oil on the nail fold prevents cracks.
How often?
As often as needed - but gently every time. Vigorous daily scraping irritates the nail fold more than the dirt does. Anyone working with paint, soil or oil is better off keeping their nails short: the shorter the free edge, the less collects underneath.
Caring for the instrument
- Rinse after every use and dry it completely. Residual moisture is the most common cause of spots on otherwise flawless stainless steel.
- If several people use it, disinfect it before passing it on.
- Do not misuse it as a lever - a bent tip can no longer be guided cleanly.
Common questions
Nail cleaner or nail brush?
A nail brush cleans the surface of the nail and the skin around it, but it does not reach under the free edge. That is exactly what the nail cleaner does. The two complement each other; neither replaces the other.
Can I use a cuticle knife for cleaning?
Better not. A cuticle knife has a cutting edge and is meant for loosening cuticle - under the nail it easily damages the thin skin that seals the nail fold.
Why does the spot under the nail turn white?
Usually because you worked too far back and the nail has come away from the bed. It grows back on if you leave it alone - until then, cut short and stop going underneath.
