Household Scissors

Household scissors from Solingen

Good household scissors do more than cut paper. They have to open packaging, cut herbs, cut through cardboard and, if need be, a cable tie too – and do so for years without going blunt.

Learn more: sizes, quality and care

That is exactly what Solingen scissors are made for: hardened, rust-free stainless steel, a cleanly adjusted joint and a blade that can be resharpened.

Which size for which task?

Scissor sizes are traditionally given in inches – the overall length is measured.

  • 4 to 5 inches – small and handy, for the desk, the travel first-aid kit and fine work
  • 5.5 to 6 inches – the classic all-purpose size for kitchen and household
  • 7 to 8 inches – great leverage for cardboard, leather and thicker materials

Why a second pair of scissors for fabric?

Household scissors are all-rounders with a robust blade – just right for paper and cardboard. And that is exactly why they are unsuitable for textiles: the grind is coarser and the cut edge frays.

The reverse is also true. Paper blunts fabric scissors within a few cuts. Anyone who expects both from one pair of scissors will be buying a new pair every two years. You will find the range for textile work under Fabric Scissors & Tailor's Shears.

How to recognise good scissors

  • Screw instead of rivet – only screwed scissors can be readjusted and sharpened
  • Smooth action – the blades run evenly without catching or jamming
  • Cuts right to the tip – even the last bit must still cut, not squeeze
  • Hardened stainless steel – keeps its edge longer and does not rust

Care

Dry after contact with moisture, put a drop of oil in the joint now and then, do not put in the dishwasher. If the scissors become blunt, they do not need to be replaced – our sharpening service will restore them.

Also for left-handers

We carry genuine left-handed scissors with mirrored blades. Why that is more than cosmetic is explained in the article Scissors for left-handers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Household & Fabric Scissors

What is the difference between household scissors and fabric scissors?

The household scissors are the all-rounder for paper, packaging and everyday use, while the fabric scissors (tailor's shears) have long, sharp blades for cleanly cutting fabric. You'll find all models under Household & Fabric Scissors.

Which scissors are suitable for cutting fabric and sewing?

For cutting fabric, fabric scissors with a long, continuously sharp edge or tailor's shears are ideal – they glide cleanly through the fabric without fraying it.

What are pinking shears and what are they used for?

Pinking shears cut a zigzag edge that prevents fabric from fraying – ideal for sewing projects and decorative edges.

Are there fabric and household scissors for left-handers?

Yes – we carry genuine left-handed models, such as the Dreiturm household scissors for left-handers and the Dreiturm fabric scissors for left-handers – with a correctly ground edge for clean cutting.

Which scissors are suitable for paper and crafting?

Paper scissors or sturdy household scissors are suitable for paper – not the fabric scissors, so their fine edge stays sharp.

Why shouldn't fabric scissors be used to cut paper?

Paper is abrasive and quickly dulls the fine edge of fabric scissors. Keep your fabric scissors exclusively for textiles and use separate paper scissors or household scissors for paper.

Household scissors with plastic or stainless steel handles – which is better?

Scissors with plastic handles are light and easy to grip, while the all-metal household scissors made of stainless steel are especially sturdy and hygienically washable – the right choice depends on how you use them.

What makes Solingen household and fabric scissors special?

Solingen scissors stand for precise grinding, a clean cut and long-lasting sharpness – for example the models from Dreiturm. To see how a good pair of scissors is made, read our guide How a Solingen pair of scissors is made.

Are the scissors made of stainless steel?

Yes – our household and fabric scissors are made of stainless steel: sharp edge, hygienic, durable and easy to care for.

Can I have my household or fabric scissors resharpened?

Yes – high-quality scissors can be resharpened. Our sharpening service keeps the edge precise for a long time.

How do I care for and clean my scissors?

Wipe dry after use, occasionally lubricate the joint with a drop of oil, and store the scissors dry to prevent surface rust.

Where can I find an overview of all household and fabric scissors?

You'll find all models together under Household & Fabric Scissors. For nail care there are the nail scissors, and for the kitchen the knives from Solingen.
