It is this courage that the blade stands for. It was inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's speech "Citizenship in a Republic". An excerpt from this speech, known as "The Man in the Arena", is engraved in full on the back of the blade.
The speech says that it is not the critic who counts, but that all credit belongs to the man in the arena who dares greatly.
