Wet Shaving: Safety Razor, Shavette or Straight Razor?

Dovo Primo Rasierhobel für die klassische Nassrasur, Made in Germany

Wet shaving has a reputation that gets in its own way: complicated, bloody, something for nostalgics. In truth it is mainly a question of the right tool and the right order of steps. Once you understand why a cartridge razor stresses the skin differently than a single blade, you rarely want to go back. This guide sorts out the three tools, names the accessories you need and describes how a shave actually runs.

Why shave wet at all?

  • One blade instead of five. Multi-blade systems pull the hair out of the follicle before cutting it, and it snaps back below the surface. That is exactly what encourages ingrown hairs. A single blade cuts at skin level.
  • Far lower running costs. A double-edge blade costs cents, a cartridge many times that. The razor itself usually pays for itself within the first year.
  • Less waste. What is left is a steel blade, not a plastic carrier.
  • Control. You decide the angle, the pressure and the number of passes.

Safety razor – the way in

  • The blade sits in a head that sets the angle for you. It is forgiving of mistakes in how you hold it.
  • Blades are standardised (double edge) and any brand fits. You can work through several until sharpness and skin tolerance match.
  • There are closed combs for everyday use and open combs for dense beard growth.
  • Suitable for practically anyone coming from a cartridge razor.

Shavette – the straight razor without the honing

  • The shape and handling of a straight razor, but with a replaceable blade. Everything to do with stropping and sharpening falls away.
  • The blade is exposed – the angle comes entirely from your wrist. That is the real thing to learn.
  • Ideal for contours, the neckline and the cheek line, also as a complement to the safety razor.
  • The standard in barbering, because every blade is used only once.

Straight razor – the tool for the experienced

  • A honed blade that lasts for decades, but has to be stropped on leather regularly and honed again now and then.
  • The time it takes is part of the point. Anyone who finds no pleasure in it will not use the razor for long.
  • Blade width and point shape determine how it behaves; ebony, olive wood or horn are handle options, not quality grades.
  • Worth it if you want to treat shaving as a craft – not as a faster route to a smooth face.

What you need besides the blade

  • Shaving brush. It lifts the beard hair and works water into the soap. Badger hair holds a lot of water, synthetic hair dries faster and is vegan.
  • Soap or cream. Both are whipped up, not sprayed on. The lather should be creamy and slightly glossy, not airy – air bubbles contribute nothing.
  • A bowl. For whipping the lather and keeping it warm. A mug will do at a pinch.
  • Blades that fit the tool. Double edge for safety razors, single-edge blades for most shavettes. The two are not interchangeable.

The shave step by step

  1. Prepare the skin. Ideally straight after a shower. Warm water softens the hair, which noticeably reduces the force needed.
  2. Whip up the lather. Wet the brush, work the soap for about half a minute, then work it into the face in circular motions – do not paint it on. Lifting the hairs is half the job.
  3. First pass with the grain. In the direction of growth. Hold the razor flat, around 30 degrees, and guide it without pressure. Its own weight is enough.
  4. Re-lather, second pass across the grain. Never go over dry skin again.
  5. Against the grain only if needed. And only on skin that tolerates it. Many people get a good result without this step.
  6. Rinse cold and care for the skin. An alcohol-free aftershave or balm calms it; alcohol stings and dries out.

Common mistakes

  • Applying pressure. The most common mistake among switchers. A cartridge razor demands pressure, a safety razor punishes it with cuts.
  • Too little water in the lather. Dry lather makes the blade drag. Add water drop by drop until it glosses.
  • Trying to do it all in one pass. Two light passes are kinder to the skin than one with force.
  • Using a blade for too long. A double-edge blade lasts three to seven shaves depending on the beard. It is a consumable.
  • Leaving everything wet after the shave. That costs safety razors and straight razors their service life – why, is explained in Rust spots on instruments.

Care and durability

  • Rinse after every shave and pat dry, and leave the razor open to dry.
  • Take the blade out after the last pass – inside a damp head it rusts faster than it goes blunt.
  • Rinse the brush, squeeze it out and let it dry with the bristles pointing down. Soap residue in the knot is the most common cause of a brush shedding hair.
  • With a straight razor the strop is part of the routine – before every shave, not after. What the steel designations mean is explained in Stainless, nickel-plated, stainless steel.
