Finding the best tweezers – for eyebrows, facial hair and splinters

Tweezers with straight, slanted and pointed tips side by side

Which tweezers are the right ones is decided almost exclusively by the shape of the tip – and by whether they close cleanly. Everything else, from the length to the surface, is comfort. This guide assigns the tip shapes to the applications: eyebrows, facial hair, ingrown hairs, splinters and fine mechanical work.

If you already know which tip shape you need: you will find the range sorted by shape under tweezers.

The test that decides everything

Hold a closed pair of tweezers up to the light. If you can see a gap between the tips, fine hairs will slip through – no matter how expensive the piece was. Both arms must meet exactly, without lateral offset. That is the only quality test you can carry out yourself before buying, and it says more than any material specification.

Advantages and disadvantages of tweezers

In favour:

  • precise gripping, depending on the tip shape for quite different tasks
  • versatile – cosmetics, splinters, ticks, fine mechanics
  • robust construction, hardly any wear, no moving parts
  • hygienic and easy to clean, can be disinfected

Against:

  • requires practice with very fine or ingrown hairs – here splinter tweezers or magnifying tweezers help
  • very pointed models can injure the skin; risk of infection when working uncleanly
  • very thin tips bend if the tweezers lie loose in a bag
  • limited force transmission – unsuitable for firmly lodged foreign bodies

Which tip shape for which purpose?

Overview of tweezer shapes: straight, slanted and pointed tips compared

  • Straight – the standard model for removing hairs on all areas of the body.
  • Slanted – the all-rounder for plucking eyebrows. The bevelled edge grips several hairs and sits well against the line of the skin.
  • Pointed – for splinters in the skin and ingrown hairs.
  • Angled – more for fine mechanical applications such as watches and microelectronics.
Tip shape Ideal for Recommendation
Slanted tip Plucking eyebrows, facial hair, several hairs at once Slanted tweezers
Fine, pointed tip Ingrown hairs, splinters, very fine hairs Splinter tweezers
Straight tip Standard hair removal on the whole body Cosmetic tweezers
With magnification (loupe) Seeing and gripping very fine or light hairs Magnifying tweezers
Automatic / plucking Fast, low-pain plucking of many hairs Automatic tweezers

Special shapes

Magnifying tweezers

Magnifying tweezers 11 cm with a tapering tip and a built-in magnifying glass

Magnifying tweezers – with two- to fourfold magnification, in order to see very fine or light hairs in the first place and to grip them safely.

Watchmaker's tweezers

Watchmaker's tweezers with a slanted, curved tip for fine mechanical work

Watchmaker's tweezers – slanted, curved tip for fine mechanical work. Also used for removing blackheads and ingrown hairs.

Automatic tweezers

Automatic tweezers for plucking hairs with a self-gripping tip

Automatic tweezers – grip and pull by themselves. Because of the fast movement, plucking is perceived as considerably less painful.

Tweezers with a light

Tweezers with an integrated LED light

Tweezers with an LED light – for poorly lit surroundings, for example when travelling or in a hotel bathroom.

Cilia tweezers

Cilia tweezers with a slanted tip

Slanted tip – the angle is designed for plucking the eyebrows and removing facial hair and grips several hairs at once.

Splinter tweezers

Splinter tweezers with a very finely tapering tip for ingrown hairs

Fine, pointed tweezers – for removing splinters and ingrown facial hairs. They also reach what a slanted tip can no longer grip.

Tweezers set

Tweezers set with four pairs of tweezers in different tip shapes

Tweezers set, 4 pieces – four tip shapes in one case. Sensible if you do not know which shape suits you.

Technical and laboratory tweezers

Anatomical forceps made of stainless steel with blunt gripping ends

Extra long tweezers with a curved tip made of stainless steel

Laboratory tweezers 20 cm with an angled tip and a grooved handle

The angled laboratory tweezers made of stainless steel allow precise work in the laboratory. With the pointed, grooved ends, sensitive materials, tissue or samples can be gripped reliably; grooves on the handle provide a non-slip hold. Suitable for chemistry, pharmacy, cosmetics and food & beverage.

Cosmetic tweezers are usually shorter, technical models for aquaristics, the grill or electronics considerably longer. You will find an overview under technical and special tweezers.

Plucking eyebrows with tweezers – step by step

  1. Clean and disinfect the tweezers before use.
  2. Comb the eyebrows with a small brush in the direction of growth in order to see the natural shape.
  3. Always pluck individual hairs in the direction of growth and directly at the root – that way you avoid broken hairs and redness.
  4. Work in good light, if necessary with tweezers with an LED light or magnifying tweezers.
  5. Cool and soothe the skin after plucking with a clean, cool cloth.

Removing ingrown hairs and splinters safely

  1. Soften the skin beforehand with warm water and disinfect the spot.
  2. Use fine, pointed tweezers (such as splinter tweezers) – only then can the hair or the splinter be gripped precisely.
  3. Grip the hair as close to the skin as possible and pull it out in the direction of growth, without scratching the skin open.
  4. Disinfect the spot again afterwards.
  5. Note: with deeply ingrown hairs, inflammation or pus, do not continue working yourself – see a dermatologist or a beautician. There is a risk of infection.

Care

  • Clean after every use and disinfect the tips, for example with alcohol.
  • Store dry and protected – preferably in a case. A bent tip can hardly be restored.
  • Do not misuse them as a tool for hard objects; the fine tips spring apart in the process.

Frequently asked questions about tweezers

Which tweezers are best suited for eyebrows?

For eyebrows, tweezers with a slanted tip are best suited. The angle allows precise gripping of individual hairs and flat plucking along the brow line. For very fine or light hairs, pointed tweezers or magnifying tweezers are additionally helpful.

Which tweezers for ingrown hairs and splinters?

Fine, tapering tweezers (splinter tweezers) are ideal, because they can also grip very thin hairs and deep-seated splinters precisely. Disinfect the tool before and after use. In the case of inflammation it is better to see a dermatologist.

Which tweezers for very fine or light hairs on the face?

For fine hairs, pointed tweezers or magnifying tweezers with 2- to 4-fold magnification are recommended, so that you can also see and safely grip barely visible hairs.

Straight or slanted tweezers – which is better?

Both have their strengths: the slanted tip is the all-rounder for plucking eyebrows and facial hair, the straight tip is suitable for hair removal on the whole body. Anyone who wants to cover both reaches for a tweezers set.

How do I recognise good tweezers?

Hold the closed tweezers up to the light. The tips must meet flush and without lateral offset. If you can see a gap, fine hairs will slip through – regardless of the price.

How do I clean and care for tweezers correctly?

Clean the tweezers after every use and disinfect the tips, for example with alcohol. Store them dry and protected, preferably in a case, so that the tips do not bend.
